Creating Links

Another new feature in Firebolt 2.0 is the ability to create links to a gate index page, or to unique preplan pages, within the application and without using an outside resources such as Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Creating Gate Key Index Links

To create a link to your "GateKeyIndex.pdf" page located in your department's Maps folder, click on the key icon in the navigation bar.  This will create a draggable key icon in the upper left hand corner of the map page.  Once a draggable key has been added to a map page, you cannot navigate away from that page via swiping or the directional arrows until you either save the key link, or cancel the key link request.  You may however still navigate away from the page at this point by clicking the grid button.

Touching the key icon makes it transparent, which means that it's ready to be dragged!

Once you have dragged the key icon to where you would like to set the link,  click the save button  located where the key button used to be.  If you've decided that you no longer wish to set a gate index link, click the red cancel button located up and to the left of the draggable key.

After clicking the save button, an alert will appear to let you know that your link has been successfully saved, and you should now see a purple key link at the location specified by you. This will link back to the "GateKeyIndex.pdf" page in your department's Maps folder.

Creating Preplan Links

You create a link to a preplan page in the same manner that you create a link to the gate key index page.  The preplan button is located to the right of the key button.

Creating a preplan link has the added functionality that you can enter the name of the specific preplan PDF file that you would like to link to.  The PDF filename that you enter must exist in your department's Maps folder in order for the link to work.

As you can see, a red preplan link has been added to this map page.  This will link back to whatever PDF file you gave Firebolt.  Firebolt will then look for this PDF file in your department's Map folder on Dropbox.

'Bad' Preplan Links

Firebolt handles missing or 'bad' preplan links for you- that is, if it can't find a PDF file in your department's Maps folder, then it will delete this link and tell you to add the appropriate PDF file to Dropbox before trying to link to this file again.  (If you would like to delete links manually, see section two about the "links.json" file under Important Files)

For example, let's say we've just added a preplan link called "ApartmentPreplan.pdf".  However, we possibly forgot to add this file to Dropbox, or we've misspelled it.  The next time the red preplan link to "ApartmentPreplan.pdf" is clicked, Firebolt will recognize that this is a 'bad' link and will delete all existing link data for "ApartmentPreplan.pdf"(i.e. If you've created several links of multiple pages all pointing to "ApartmentPreplan.pdf", Firebolt will delete ALL of these links, not just the one bad link that you clicked on).  This feature was added so that maps aren't populated with 'dead' links.

Why Can't I Create a Link Here?

Firebolt sets a few basic restrictions on where you can add key or preplan links.  You can't create links outside of the boundaries shown above by the red lines near the perimeter of the map page.  You're specific map pages may not have these red lines, but the ones shown above will give you a general idea of the boundaries for creating a link.  This restriction was created so that you can't create a link too close to a directional arrow- you don't want to be struggling with clicking the correct item when responding to an emergency!

Another restriction is that you can't create a link the upper left hand corner of the page where the draggable key and preplan icons initially appear.  Move it a little to the right, or just a little bit south, and you should be able to set a link.  Firebolt just doesn't want you creating a link where our new icons will be appearing!

And on a final note- since these are the only two restrictions Firebolt has with regards to where you place your links, be smart about it! Try to avoid having your links overlap if at all possible.
